Do I need to throw away stuffed animals that have mold on them?

October 25, 2009 - 5:41 pm 8 Comments

I am getting ready to move and I cleaned out my closet to find that one wall has two huge patches of blackish, green, spotty yellow mold. It is on down blankets, stuffed animals, clothes, and other blankets. What should I do? Throw it all away? Help!

Unfortunately, yes, you need to throw the items away. Mold can be extremely toxic. I also strongly recommend that you wear a mask and gloves when handling the items. Carefully put them in a plastic garbage bag, dispose. Shower yourself well when finished. You want to stir up the LEAST amount of mold spores and don’t want it to get into your lungs or on anything else. You don’t want to carry it to your new home, either. Remember, you can replace belongings, just not your health.

Whats the best way to store stuffed animals?

October 23, 2009 - 4:53 pm 6 Comments

I am putting away childhood stuffed animals but i don’t want them to be gross later. Is it ok to put them in large storage containers in the attic? should i put something in the ontainer with them?

Help!!

It is okay, however you should induvidually wrap them. You can use grocery bags. Just place them inside and tie them up.

Then you can put them in large containers and will not have to worry about dust,or mold and mildew from damp fabric.

Oh, and in the container make a layer of newspaper on the bottom of the container and one layer over everything on the the top, this will absorb any potential moisture if the container sweats at all in attic.

Cheers

Where can I buy the stuffed animals you can write on?

Where can I buy the stuffed animals that you can have people sign? One of my students is moving away, and I thought it would be cute if our whole class could sign a stuffed animal for her.

That is a good idea!
My daughter has a DoodleBear, and she loves it…anyway, your best bet would be Toys R Us…
Walmart and Target also carry those types of things.
Here’s a link to Toys R Us’s.
See which one you like.

I make vintage stuffed animals from owls to elephants to giraffes…
And I recently discovered maybe I could sell them because all they do is sit around my house.
They are really cute!
Any suggestions as to what website to use to sell them on?
Or even a website where I can make a website to sell them?

You should deffinently look into Etsy.com Basically its your own website, you can list items and sell them! :D

Where can I donate used stuffed animals?

October 17, 2009 - 8:21 pm 4 Comments

I live in New Jersey and my family and I are getting rid of tons of stuffed animals. We want to donate them somewhere that will benefit children, but I know a lot of places won’t accept them because they aren’t new. Any suggestions?

Call your local Child Protection Services in your area. Many abused children are taken out of homes without anything including toys. Also Domestic Violence Shelters and even Family Shelters as well. You can also donate to Outreach Programs in your area that have thrift stores that sell slightly used items to benefit their programs in helping people get out of poverty. I have listed a few resources that can point you in the right directions.

What do you do with your child’s mountain load of stuffed animals?

My daughter has so many stuffed animals and I don’t know what to do with them. They take up a lot of room! I should get rid of them, but all of them were gifts and they’re special. What do you do with yours? My daughter is only seven months old so she’s not attached to them yet so if I got rid of them their won’t be any tears or anything.

I hate clutter. I’m a neat freak. My daughter’s zoo full of stuffed animals was grating on my nerves and she never played with them so we gave them to the Good Will. You could also donate them to your local police station or fire station and they’ll give them to children who are in crisis situations. You could also donate them to a local church nursery. You could donate some to a hospital pediatrics ward for sick children. Just some ideas.

How do you clean your children’s stuffed animals?

How do you clean your children’s stuffed animals and other non machine washable toys? I want it to smell clean and be clean on germs as best as possible. I have 6 mo old and she tends to spit up on her toys when she’s playing. Thanks!

Truthfully, I haven’t found many that can’t be washed in the washer on delicate cycle. If there are electronics in them, there is usually a flap or something in the back to remove them. Delicate cycle and either tumble in the dryer with a tennis ball or two to re-fluff them or hang in the sunshine on the clothes line.

For those that I don’t think it’s safe to wash in the machine, I have washed them in the sink with barely warm water and a gentle touch.

I would hesitate on using any spray stuff on them as the baby does put them in her mouth. I think the chemicals in such sprays are far more dangerous than the "germs" that might be there. A spin in the dryer for 1/2 hour with a damp towel will remove dust and kill dust mites and some germs if you’re really that concerned.

Is there anywhere in the Cincinnati area that I can donate very gently used stuffed animals?

My two daughters would like to donate many stuffed animals to other children for use, not for resale. These are in excellent condition, barely used at all. Please advise if there is a facility that will take these to sterilize and pass on to other children.

wash them, air dry, cut off tags & ribbons, and donate them to the local ER.
