DV Kitchen Adds H.264 to QuickTime Publishing

April 15, 2010 - 8:41 am No Comments

DV Kitchen, the world’s leading video encoder & publishing suite for Mac OS X has added support for H.264 using QuickTime as the wrapper.

H.264 or Advanced Video Coding (AVC) is an industry standard for video compression. The H.264 standard is also known as MPEG-4 Part 10 and is a successor to earlier standards such as MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. An ITU standard for compressing video based on MPEG-4 that is popular, especially for high-definition video. AVC stands for Advanced Video Coding. Actually its identical to H.264 so you can find it as H.264, H.264/AVC, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC or MPEG-4 Part 10 (it can be twice as efficient as MPEG-4 Part 2).

Taking advantage of today’s high-speed chips, H.264 delivers MPEG-4 quality with a frame size up to four times greater. It can also provide MPEG-2 quality at a reduced data rate, requiring as little as one third the original bandwidths. You can think it as the “successor” of the existing formats (MPEG-2, DivX, XviD etc) as it aims in offering similar video quality in half the size of the formats mentioned before (this reduction enables burning one HD movie onto a conventional DVD).

There are many H.264 codecs, from Apple and many other companies, as well as open source codecs. In our experiments, we have found one codec, called x264, if properly programmed, to deliver superior results to any other H.264 codec we’ve tested.

Hot New Video Recipes from DV Kitchen

Deciding on the best combination of codec, frame size and bitrate is the tricky but essential task faced by anyone encoding video for the web.

In this article, I describe how to use SampleLab, one of 5 unique tools built into video compression suite DV Kitchen to take the guess work out of the encoding equation.

SampleLab is the only tool in the world that is designed to help you determine the best encoding setting for your videos.

Let’s say I have a video of a two people in a park that I want to put on my website. The first question I face is what encoding settings, or recipe, is going to make this clip look spectacular on the web, but not take up unnecessary bandwidth?

That’s the question that SampleLab was designed to answer. A master chef always tastes a variety of samples before finalizing a recipe. A master video compressionist does the same thing.

Fast Start with QuickSpecs

In SampleLab, you have the option to choose an existing recipe or create your own. Either way, the fastest way to get started is with QuickSpecs, the built-in default options. Choose from the amazing x264 codec, Flash FLV, or Windows media formats, choose any frame size and a bitrate, click go and you’re done.

Next, create a second sample with different characteristics and compare it against the first. SampleLab allows you to toggle between your samples while they’re playing in the built in video player.

Repeat the exercise with as many different settings as you like until you are satisfied that you have the achieved the ‘threshold of quality’ (TOQ) . . . the setting that represents the best trade-off between quality and bitrate size.

“TOQ” is the phrase coined by DV Kitchen designer Josh Mellicker to describe the diminishing returns of increasing bitrate over a certain amount for a particular movie. The TOQ of a clip is the “sweet spot” - just enough bitrate so the movie looks fabulous, but no more.

SampleLab is by far the best way to find the TOQ for each clip you encode. When you decide on a winner, save your recipe so you can recall it in the future with a single click.

That’s it. That’s how a formerly complex task has become quick and easy thanks to SampleLab.

It looks like you’re in need of some good spyware adware removal software, said a guy that sounded like a cowboy.
