How long can, or does a Swanz-Ganz Catheter Stay in, I thought they were temporary?

I was told from a friend that they were gonna leave it in a Family member.

An S-G catheter is used to measure incremental changes in heart-pulmonary-fluid pressures. When measurements are obtained, the amount of IV fluid to replace is then known and can be given to the patient. BP (arterial, not venous) is also among the many items measured as well. So the patient has to be stable to have this removed. It is a temporary device.

The device used to insert this, an introducer, can be left in place after the ICU stay, and then used as a central IV line. This acts as an "outer sleeve" so that the S-G catheter can be inserted inside it and guided to the appropriate position.

They are temporary as far as I know. There would be no reason to leave one in for a long time. Also frequently after a few days, they also start having technical issues where they don’t measure the pressures as accurately as they did at first.

Usually about 2 or 3 days. It is a temporary catheter, heparin is used. I’ve had at least 6 of these.
