Maestro John Williams arranged a piece based on Aaron Copeland’s arrangement of the old Shaker Tune “Simple Gifts” as “Variations on a Shaker Melody”. Yo-Yo Ma performs along with Itzhak Perlman on violin, Gabriela Montero on piano and Anthony McGill on clarinet.

They were not playing this live. Thats okay, its not a bad thing. The cold weather would have prevented the instruments from staying in proper tune. Its not that these artists could not manage to “play it for real”. It is not like lipsynching. It is just what was required in this situation. It was readily acknowledged during the broadcast.
