What are the origins of putting gifts underneath a Christmas tree?

I know what the origins of Christmas trees are…comes from paganism. but what about the practice of putting gifts underneath it?
Yes the trees are pagan, the gifts at Christmas actually come from the real/original Saint Nicholas as do stockings
