How do you make plush/stuffed toys?
i’m interested in making my own plush toys from scratch, but not sure how to start. i think i have all the necessary materials and i want to get started soon. i’m planning on making some to give as gifts this holiday season. any advice would be greatly appreciated!
thanks for answering! =)
You will need a pattern, go to the fabric store and look through the books. Get the pattern, and read the back for suggestions on choices of kinds of materials you should use, what to stuff it with, what else to buy.
All you do is cut out the animal, iron the seams and the pieces, and sew it together, right sides together except when told by the pattern to do otherwise. Leave a couple inches of seam open [choose a long seam and be sure and knot off each side so you can't rip it] to stuff the animal with fiberfill. Turn the animal right side out, and Hand stitch the open seam closed, and you are done.
Be sure and do any embellishments to the animal before you fill it, like embroidering faces, adding buttons. the pattern will tell you when and how.
Their are many choices of material, acrylic plush, chenille, cotton or poly cotton with Xmas designs on it. Adults might like some gold or silver lame. Velvet is hard to work with, but would be pretty.
You can choose to make your animal look real, or fanciful.
The material should be something that does not wrinkle or crush easily, and should not be see-through the fiberfill and seams would show.
And don’t forget you can dress the animal too, in a theme that would please the potential owner. and the animal could be part of the theme. The person loves to cook? Dress a cute piggy or a chicken animal in a chef’s apron and toque. .

There are lots of lessons and patterns online for making plushies of all kinds:

But I also suggest you check out these 2 sub-boards (under the Toys & Playthings board) at craftster.org since a lot of those boards have to do with making them (there are even archives and beginner tips, etc.):
